Budget suggestions: September 27, 2013

     
Review the sick and vacation pay policy. Eliminate the one-time payment when you retire for unused sick and annual leave. If employees don't use all their annual leave maybe the policy is way too generous.


Celebrating SRU's 125th year is important, but does the party really need to be for an entire year? Why not cut back to just one month, the month of the actual founding? How much money is being spent on new logo's, letterhead, envelopes, business cards, etc. that will only be used temporarily? How much time and efforts of staff, faculty, managers and administrators is being devoted to the year-long celebration while their time and efforts could be redirected to solving the budget problem?

Last Friday, the Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees officially approved the fiscal year 2013-14 budget.

As I shared with you earlier this year in my State of the University address, we started the fiscal year with a $5.2 million structural budget deficit.  Through the efforts of many people, we were able to present the trustees with a balanced budget.
