Budget suggestions: October 25, 2013

I am not a big fan of turning down the heat to save $10,000 per year. I would offer that we will see an increase of $20,000 in our electric bill due to personal heater usage. I personally hate being cold! Conversely, I do not mind the heat but we continue to air condition over 20 major buildings with electric run chillers that seem to run from morning until night from April thru October, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process. We air condition many nearly empty buildings from May thru August when few students, faculty and staff are here. I would like to see an effort to reduce electricity usage that will produce a much greater environmental and cost savings impact than burning the miniscule amount of coal that we do. We use a few thousand tons of coal annually to produce steam whereby the local utility burns millions of tons of coal over that same time period to produce electricity. The air conditioning settings could and should be increased for every day of the week, not only on Friday's. If we need a slogan we could call it "Show some skin summer".

As I shared with you earlier this year in my State of the University address, we started the fiscal year with a $5.2 million structural budget deficit.  Through the efforts of many people, we were able to present the trustees with a balanced budget.

So, how’d we do it?
