Budget suggestions: October 30, 2013

Here is an idea that I proposed to the energy conservation committee that got nowhere. SRU needs a single site/place where any class being held anywhere on campus is listed so it could be scheduled on the energy management system. The way it is now is that basically during the regular school year all buildings run until10 p.m. I have no idea if anyone is in there or not. During the summer session all buildings run until 5:30 p.m. I have no idea if anyone is still in there or not. I have no problem running the HVAC if some one needs it, but if no one is in there I would like to shut things off. I am often called by someone saying students are in that building until 10 p.m. Since I have no idea where in the building they are I keep the whole building on.
The energy management system SRU has is sophisticated enough that in most cases I could run part of a building, sometimes run just one classroom. Since HVAC is 3/4 of the energy dollars SRU spends, it would be a good idea to run buildings only when they are occupied and not to a certain time everyday. The only time I am informed of who is in a building is for special events. I get requests for a change in the HVAC schedule verbally, by email, phone calls and stacks of paper. It would workbetter if there was a single source for heating/air conditioning requests. I get calls from people saying they will be in a building on a certain night. I have no idea if what they are doing is approved or just something they want to do. Being the nice guy I am, I turn the building on for them. Scheduling needs improvement. Faculty and staff need to know if they will be in a building during off hours they should not expect the HVAC will be turned on for them.

Last Friday, the Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees officially approved the fiscal year 2013-14 budget.

As I shared with you earlier this year in my State of the University address, we started the fiscal year with a $5.2 million structural budget deficit.  Through the efforts of many people, we were able to present the trustees with a balanced budget.

So, how’d we do it?
