 Medical Seuveillance Policy 

 

SPOTLIGHT

  1. SCOPE
    This policy applies to all University employees who are involved in asbestos removal projects and/or who are required to wear a respirator in their job responsibilities.
  2. PURPOSE
    To provide medical documentation that the employee can wear a respirator without restrictions that could hinder their health.
  3. PROCEDURE
    Medical surveillance shall consist of the following areas, as specified by OSHA (29 CFR 1910.1001):
    1. Chest X-ray, posterior-anterior, at least 14” x 17”;
    2. Pulmonary function tests on a spirometer, including FVC, FEV-1, and MVV-25;
    3. Occupational and personal history, designed to elicit symptoms of respiratory disease;
    4. Height and weight;
    5. Respirator clearance statement, indicating that there exists no known medical reason why an employee cannot wear a respirator;
    6. Medical surveillance will be provided by an outside health service specializing in occupational health;
    7. Every employee under medical surveillance shall be given the results of their medical tests in the form of a written report. The employee shall have full access to their own record, as will their designated representative;
    8. All medical records shall be maintained in a permanent file.  Complete confidentiality shall be maintained.
