SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A 2.4-mile swim coupled with a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. That, in a nutshell is an Ironman Triathlon. A daunting task to say the least, even for the most adventurous - if not physically fit - of those among us.

That said, participants get 17 hours to complete the race, so there is that.

However, for those just getting ready to stick their toes into the triathlete waters, Slippery Rock University has a much gentler "kiddie pool" available through the Campus Recreation Mini Triathlon.

The 10th annual event will take place at 7:30 a.m., April 23 at the Aebersold Student Recreation Center. Competitor check-in begins at 6 a.m. The event starts at 7:30 a.m.

The event includes:

  • 425-yard swim: 17 lengths in a 25-yard pool with two swimmers per lane;
  • 10.5-mile bike: Eight laps on a 1.3-mile asphalt loop (portions of the course are open to vehicle traffic); and
  • 2.5-mile run: One lap on a grass/cement/dirt/gravel/asphalt course (portions of the course are open to vehicle traffic

"The Mini Triathlon is a great first time race for people interested in exploring what it's like to take part in such an activity, as well as a perfect 'tune up' for seasoned triathletes to test their fitness level at the start of the season," said Andy Loue, assistant director of facility operations and outdoor programming for Campus Recreation.

Age groups 16 to 55+ will compete in pre-set brackets. Relay teams can consist of two or three members and can be either co-ed or same gender, and can be comprised of any age. All teams will compete in the same division.

The event will be staged rain or shine.

Prior to April 10, individual registration is $20 for SRU students and $35 for the general public; team registration is $50 for SRU students and $65 for the general public. Rates will increase by $10 on April 10.
