SRU’S Chmielewski selected as interim CHES dean
JUNE 29, 2015
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Jerry Chmielewski, a Slippery Rock University biology professor, has been named interim dean for the College of Health, Environment and Science.
Chmielewski, who joined the SRU faculty in 1990, as an assistant professor, takes over June 29, following the retirement of Susan Hannam who has served the University for 28 years. She was named interim dean in 2005 and dean of the college in 2007.
"We will certainly miss Dr. Hannam's leadership, but I believe Dr. Chmielewski will provide the necessary guidance and bring all of the resources necessary to the post while we conduct a national search. I am pleased he is willing to take on these added duties during the search," said Philip Way, provost and vice president for academic and student affairs.
"I am honored to have been selected to serve as interim dean of CHES, and know that I will be working with faculty who are collectively focused on student success. As a 25-year member of the faculty, I have had the pleasure of not only working closely with those in the department of biology, but also with faculty across the College of Health, Environment and Science and the entire University, so I am confident, that with their cooperation we will continue to deliver quality academic programs to all of our students," Chmielewski said.
Previously, Chmielewski served as acting associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and was chairperson of his department for multiple years, having last been elected in 2014.
He has been called a "master teacher who actively engages his students" and has received praise from his students as part of their faculty evaluations. He was active in helping the University develop its newly approved physician assistant program, which will begin classes in the fall.
His SRU service work includes longtime leadership in the Green Fund grants program and as a judge for the SRU-hosted Western Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science.
Chmielewski earned his undergraduate, masters and doctoral degree at the University of Waterloo.
