SRU’s mascot Rocky helps the crowd get loud

AUGUST 20, 2015

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Forget the San Diego chicken or the Pirates' Buccaneer, at Slippery Rock University we've got Rocky - The Pride of The ROCK.

Rocky roams the sidelines at SRU athletic events, encouraging fans to get loud and get proud, providing laughs and crowd-pleasing entertainment. Rocky also represents the University at a variety of community engagement events, sharing high-fives and hugs with ROCK fans of all ages. It takes a lot of time, dedication and hard work to do Rocky's job, but through its interpreter, (Rocky doesn't speak), the mascot says they wouldn't have it any other way.

"Mascots have really become a staple at athletic events," says Jon Holtz, SRU director of athletic communication. "People expect to see the mascot on the sidelines interacting with the crowd. Mascots have a unique communication role, they actually serve as a channel between the team and the crowd using non-verbal gestures and actions to engage the fans," he said.

"Rocky is a great mascot, it was even selected as the best mascot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after a fan vote that took place on Twitter," Holtz noted.
