SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock Borough has again been ranked among "The 30 Safest College Towns in America" by SafeWise, a Utah-based safety and home security company.

To compile the rankings, SafeWise security experts utilized the most recent FBI crime data from 2015 and calculated the total number of crimes committed in cities with at least one accredited, academic institution of higher education. They then weighted those numbers in relation to population statistics and other important factors. Finally, SafeWise identified relevant safety, health and educational programs that help ensure a college town's safety and security.

Slippery Rock moved up six spots from fifteenth in 2016 to No. 9 this year.

The report noted, "Overall, this picturesque town saw fewer than 40 total crimes, as reported in the FBI's most current data. That same lack of criminal activity is reflected on the SRU campus, where no arson, robbery, auto theft or murder has been reported for the past three years. University Police are available 24/7 and provide safety call boxes as well as an escort service that offers safe passage for students, faculty, visitors and staff throughout the campus."

In addition to Slippery Rock, three towns in Pennsylvania made the list, Millersville ranked 14th; Edinboro ranked 15th; and Clarion ranked 18th.
