Oct. 8, 2015
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University Wind Ensemble, with new director of bands, Jonathan Helmick, assistant professor of music, will present six works by American and foreign composers during a concert at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 27, in Swope Recital Hall.
The 48-student ensemble, which includes brass, woodwinds and percussion, will present music by American composer Luigi Zaninelli as well as Australian-born composer and pianist Percy Grainger and others. Several students will be featured as soloists as the group plays a range of styles from traditional music for wind band and music written in an Italian movie style.
"There is going to be something for everybody. You won't be able to walk away from this concert without humming a tune," said Helmick, who directs the SRU Marching Pride and Concert Band. "We're going to do a fresh take on music for wind band."
Helmick, who joined SRU from Jones Junior College in Ellisville, Miss., said performing gives students the opportunity to build their repertoire.
"It is a conglomeration of not just what they do in the ensemble, but what they've been studying in their private lessons," he said. "It is a time for them to showcase their talents and how hard they've worked over the course of the semester."
Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students.
