SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will offer a sculpture exhibition, "appetite: process and priority of consumption," from today through Oct. 29 in SRU's Martha Gault Art Gallery. The opening reception is 5-7 p.m., Oct. 13.
The display will feature artwork from Christian Benefiel, a professor of art at Shepherd University and Jerry Entristle, a professor of sculpture at Fairmont State University, where he oversees 3D foundations, foundry activities and coordinates the JD Brooks University Gallery and exhibition schedule.
Entwistle said his sculptures confront questions about civil engineering's contribution to infrastructure, with a focus on components that are too often ignored, The scale of the work, along with subtle combinations of weathered paint, oxidized alloys, natural wood and industrial fasteners hearken back to make the pieces approachable, yet dense and stoic.
Benefiel said his sculptural installations, which use repurposed materials, explore and challenge product identity drowned out by buzzwords such as pre-fab, flat-pack and low-impact. Individually the works touch on consumer culture, space and resource, and individual perception of value.
