The mission of Slippery Rock University's Nov. 5 Empty Bowls program is simple: Eat so that others may eat. The annual hunger awareness program offered more than 300 bowls available for participants to buy. Proceeds will benefit local hunger-fighting organizations and help provide Thanksgiving dinner for an estimated 150 local families. The premise of the event is simple: Participants select a homemade bowl, crafted by SRU students, for $5. In return, they receive a meager lunch of soup and bread and then get to take home the bowl they purchased. Organizers hope the bowls will serve as a constant reminder of hunger issues in the community. Participants may also donate canned foods. The bowls, which were crafted by members of the SRU Potter's Guild and students during open studio time, will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership is sponsoring the event.
