Members of the Slippery Rock University Special Education Department packed school supplies in drawstring bags for victims of Hurricane Irma, Nov. 7 at the McKay Building Auditorium. The supplies, which included markers, crayons, pencils, notebooks and water bottles with special filters, were donated by several student clubs and organizations associated with the department. The more than 200 bags will be delivered to students at the All-Saints Cathedral School in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, where Connor MacKelvey, '15, previously taught. MacKelvey and current SRU students Sydney Larner, a senior early childhood/special education major from South Park, and Jake Paterline, a graduate student in special education from Gibsonia, will visit the school and deliver the bags during winter break. Donations to support their trip can be made through their GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/47rzq-hurricane-relief-volunteer-trip.
