Greene named Harlon Hill candidate
Nov. 20, 2015
FLORENCE, Ala. - Slippery Rock University running back Shamar Greene, a junior from Duquesne, was announced today as one of 38 candidates for the 2015 Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to the best Division II football player in the nation.
Greene is a candidate for the second straight year. He was a Super Region One finalist last year after rushing for 1,482 yards in his sophomore season.
The National Harlon Hill Award Committee announced the nominees. The sports information directors at the 168 NCAA Division II football-playing institutions nominate candidates. Regional voting takes place among the sports information directors to determine two finalists from each Super Region that will advance to the national ballot.
The winner of the 2015 award will be announced Dec. 18 and will be honored Jan. 8 at a luncheon on the University of North Alabama campus.
This year's list of 38 national candidates includes seven other players from Super Region One, including four other players from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Greene was named Thursday to first team All-PSAC honors for the second straight year and picked up his third straight All-Conference honor after being named to second team honors as a freshman. This season, despite missing 2.5 games, Greene has rushed for 1,162 yards and 10 touchdowns in only 8.5 games. He is averaging 129.1 rushing yards per game, the ninth most in the nation, and is averaging 5.8 yards per carry.
Greene is the first Slippery Rock running back since Josh Kneiss in 2004-05 to run for more than 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. He has now rushed for 3,371 yards, which ranks fourth all-time in career rushing yards in program history.
Greene is coming off a 178-yard rushing effort on the road at West Chester in the PSAC Championship game last week and has run for more than 150 yards in three games this year, including against the league's top total defense (Indiana) and third best total defense (West Chester).
Slippery Rock is ranked 10th in the latest Division II national rankings and is 10-1 entering the NCAA playoffs as a No. 2 seed in Super Region One. The 10-win season is the first in double figures for SRU since 1999. The Rock will host their first NCAA playoff home game since 1999 Saturday when Virginia Union visits Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for a noon kickoff.
