Son of SRU Hall of Famers sets national HS shot put record
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Jordan Geist, a junior at Knoch High School in Saxonburg, and son of Slippery Rock University graduates Jim and Judy Geist, seems to be following in the athletic footsteps of his parents.
The younger Geist, whose parents are both members of the SRU Athletic Hall of Fame, broke the national shot put record with a throw of 69 feet, 6 1/2 inches Jan. 12 at the Slippery Rock Invitational.
Jim Geist, '89, set University and PSAC records in the javelin, was a third-place finisher at the Penn Relays and was the first SRU athlete to be invited to compete in the Dogwood Relays. Judy Whalen-Geist, '91, earned All-America honors in the shot put in both indoor (1990) and outdoor (1991) competitions and was a three-time national qualifier. The 1990 PSAC Championship Meet MVP, she claimed two PSAC titles in the shot put and claimed three shot put and two discus titles in Keystone Games competitions.
