SRU freshman entertains as part of holiday tour
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Megan Garland, a Slippery Rock University freshman, spent part of her winter break playing trombone with the Bridgeville Brass as part of the group's Fourth Annual Holiday Tour.
The group was founded in 2012 by Ryan Wolf, associate brass instructor for West Jefferson's Thomas Jefferson High School Marching Band, as an offshoot of his summer brass camps for high school students.
The primary focus of the Brass' tour was playing nursing homes in the South Fayette and Bridgeville areas in an effort to brighten the residents' spirits.
"I like going out to the retirement homes," said Garland. "The residents all sing along and take the time to talk to you after the performance. They're so appreciative."
Wolf said performing with the Bridgeville Brass is an opportunity for students to participate in a small ensemble. In a quintet, each performs his or her own part, unlike in a concert or marching band in which multiple instruments are playing the same notes.
