SRU sport management graduate is U of L speaker

Per Svensson, a 2010 Slippery Rock University sport management major and a soon-to-be doctoral sport management graduate at the University of Louisville, will deliver the student commencement address at U of L's College of Education and Human Development May 10 ceremony.

Svensson will receive his doctoral degree in educational leadership and organizational development with a concentration in sport administration at the ceremony.

Much of his research at the CEHD's health and sport sciences department examined how sports can build stronger communities and foster positive social change.

"There are a growing number of nonprofits using sports as a vehicle for youth development programs aimed to address various social issues in communities across the U.S. and across the world," Svensson said. "My research aims to examine how these sport-based organizations can increase their ability to achieve their respective missions." His address will cover those topics.

After graduating from SRU, Svensson, a native of Sweden, "joined the U of L sport administration program where he has been an exemplary doctoral student and research partner," said Professor Marion Hambrick, one of his mentors. "His research area, sport for development and peace, is at the forefront of the field.

Svensson's background in sport management includes experiences with the PGA Tour, PGA of America, Special Olympics and the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. His scholarly work has been published in the International Journal of Sport Communication and Journal of Intercollegiate Sport.

He has been hired as an assistant professor of sport management at Louisiana State University beginning fall semester.
