Students bring GetREAL branch to SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University students Jocelyne Lemay, a junior integrated marketing communications major, and Kelsey Graham, senior public relations major, made history recently when they began operating the first American branch of GetREAL at SRU. GetREAL is an organization originally founded in Canada that aims to "change the face of what it means to be a young person who stands up against LGBTQ discrimination."
According to a story in the onlinerocket.com, Lemay, who is originally from Nova Scotia, decided to start a GetREAL branch at SRU after learning of its success at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. She elicited Graham's help to lay the foundation and begin the process of becoming a recognized SRU student organization.
"One of the biggest things that GetREAL will give to SRU is the courage and confidence to allow our students to be themselves and be comfortable in their own skin. Spreading awareness and encouraging more tolerant behavior is something that we aim to do. Connecting with people on a personal level and respecting each other is what the GetREAL movement is all about," Graham said.
