SRU students earn prestigious math recognition


SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Math majors Taryn Gulkewitcz from Schnecksville; Kalene Ireland from Prospect; Jacob Edwards, and Christina Rajchel, from Butler; along with physics majors Kevin Weigle from East Palestine, Ohio and Robert Arblaster from New Castle, received an Honorable Mention in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Nicholas Hurl, SRU mathematics instructor, coached the team.

The mathematical contest in modeling is a multi-day mathematics competition where teams of undergraduate students use mathematical modeling to present their solutions to real world problems. This year, 7,218 foreign teams from Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Netherlands, Scotland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, and 418 U.S. teams competed.
