Margaret ‘Peg’ Sims inducted into SRU Athletic Hall of Fame
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Margaret 'Peg Sims', a 1975 physical education graduate, was recently inducted into the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame. A retired secondary education teacher and coach, Sims was known as the first women's cross country athlete at Slippery Rock after she joined the men's team during her four years at SRU. Sims was also a member of the women's track and field club and was instrumental in starting the conversation to move the program from the club level to the varsity level, which occurred shortly after she graduated. She took a great deal of pride in being one of the pioneers for women's athletics at Slippery Rock. After graduation, Sims embarked on a lengthy career as a teacher and coach. She taught health, physical education and swimming at Oil City High School for 34 years before retiring in 2013. She also served as the head coach of the cross country and track and field teams at Oil City for 25 years and spent time as the swimming coach as well. In addition to her coaching and teaching roles, she also served on the PIAA District 10 Committee as a Girls Athletics Representative for 30 years.
