Mathematics majors capture Judges Choice Award
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Four Slippery Rock University mathematics majors recently won the Judges' Choice Award for most creative entries in the Mathematical Association of America's MathFest scavenger hunt.
Rebekah Bright of Butler, Sean Ingimarson of Pittsburgh, Kalene Ireland of Prospect and Garrett Jones of Butler attended the 4-day Washington, DC, conference honoring the organization's 100th anniversary. According to the MAA, more than 2,500 participants registered for the largest MathFest in history.
MAA Focus magazine published a photograph of the winning students in its October/November edition. Jones was quoted for the article.
The SRU team participated in MAA's Undergraduate Radical Dash scavenger hunt on Instagram. Students solved puzzles that were posted on Instagram every night and posted their solutions via hash tag.
Lyn Miller, assistant professor of mathematics, also attended the conference. She presented "Reverse Engineering to Strengthen Critical Thinking for Pre-Service Teachers" at the conference's session on Teaching or Learning Introductory Mathematics.
