Winters presents paper at metaphysics conference

Dec. 13, 2017

Andrew Winters, a Slippery Rock University instructor of philosophy, presented his paper, "Emergence as Irreversible Phase States: A Process Account of Embryology," at the 2017 Nordic Network in Metaphysics Conference in Finland.

The conference accepted only seven papers concerning metaphysics, metametaphysics, ontology and metanology.

In his paper, Winters argued that the world should understand emergence, a phenomenon where large entities arise through interactions among smaller entities, in system and processual terms. Winters applies this model to the case of living organisms, in particular the development of the embryo to maturity.
