SRU ‘FOCUS ON ASIA’ PROGRAMS TO SHOW DIVERSITY OF CONTINENT

          SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The diversity of Asia ranging from food to politics will be spotlighted at Slippery Rock University throughout October and November with a series of free lectures, demonstration and presentations by University faculty and students.

     The events are sponsored by the university’s Asian Studies Program, Japan Club, dance department, College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, Office of International Initiatives and the International Arts and Cultures Series.

     The series opens with a lecture/demonstration including making Sushi at 4 p.m. Friday [Oct. 15] in the Russell Wright Alumni House with “Japanese Food Culture.” Those planning to attend should call Dr. George Brown, associate professor of political science, at 724-738-2435.

     SRU faculty, Dr. John Nichols, professor of history, Dr. Alison McNeal, professor of English, and Dr. Michael Stowe, associate professor of sociology, anthropology and social work, will detail their travels in Malaysia, Indonesia and India at 4 p.m. Tuesday [Oct. 19] in Spotts World Culture Building Auditorium. A follow-up session will offer
Dr. Abbas Noorbakhsh, School of Business professor, Dr. Kimberly Forrest, associate professor of health and safety, and Dr. George Brown, associate professor of political science, detailing their travels and teaching in China at 4 p.m. Oct. 26 in Spotts World Culture Building Auditorium.

      “Study Abroad Adventures in Asia” will be offered by SRU students Dino DelMastro, a health and physical education major from Bethel Park, Brian Hoffman, a political science major from Wooster, Ohio, and Kent Cannon, an anthropology major from Clintonville, as they discuss their study abroad experiences in Japan and India at 4 p.m. Oct. 21 in Carruth Rizza Hall, Room 203.

An Indian dance performance with students Amanda O’Brien, a spring dance graduate from Uniontown, and Kiley Durst, a dance major from New Castle, is set for 8 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Pearl K. Stoner Instructional Complex, West Gym.
