DANCE, JAZZ, HIP-HOP PART OF SRU DANCE DEPARTMENT
ANNUAL
‘FACULTY AND GUEST ARTIST CONCERT’ SET FOR
TUESDAY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A contemporary Chinese
fan dance choreographed by Shih-Ming Li along with modern, jazz and
hip-hop dance styles will be part of the Slippery Rock University
dance department’s annual “Faculty and Guest Artist
Concert” set for 8 p.m. Tuesday [Oct. 26] in Miller
Auditorium.
Guest faculty Teena Custer will present the
fan dance, then offer her own choreography fusing a variety of
dance styles with her signature strength and athleticism. Other
original works planned include a solo, based on the work of
Gertrude Stein and choreographed by Melissa Teodoro, assistant
professor of dance. The work was prepared for Amy Schnelle, a dance
major from Portersville and will be followed by a duet
choreographed by Nora Ambrosio, dance department chair, for
students Shannon Altman, dance major from Springdale, and Nick
Falcone, dance major from Pittsburgh.
Completing the
program will be an Indian Bharata Natyam solo by SRU guest
instructor Jaya Mani and a duet by returning SRU alumna Jennifer
Cowan.
Tickets,
$5 general admission, $3 students, are available at the door with
all proceeds benefiting the Lucy Isacco Sack Dance Scholarship
Fund.
This year's
program includes commissions by Los Angeles choreographer Victoria
Marks and New York choreographers Jeanine Durning, Art Bridgman,
and Myrna Packer.
Ambrosio will
perform Mark's work along with two actors, SRU theater Professor
David Skeele and Dennis Birkes. Chorographer Dan Froot
traveled to SRU to coach the work, as well as provide two student
workshops titled "Recipes for Collaboration - an interdisciplinary
approach to artistic creation.”
Jennifer
Keller, associate professor of dance, will perform Durning's
creation whose inspiration comes from the 17th century
Dutch paintings of Jan Vermeer. SRU dance students will
perform the Bridgman/Packer choreography which was set during a
residency at SRU last spring.
