15 SRU VOCAL MUSIC STUDENTS TO VIE FOR CHAD WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Students studying voice atSlippery Rock University will vie for top honors in the
12th Annual Chad Williamson Memorial Scholarship Competition at 2 p.m. Oct. 31 in Swope Music Hall in a continuing competition honoring the late Slippery Rock High School student who planned to attend SRU.

The competition will be judged by Daphne Alderson, a member of the Seton-Hill University music faculty and well-known performer in New York City and Pittsburgh. Her 2003-04 season included debut of a show celebrating Stephen Sondheim and Oscar Hammerstein as part of her international cabaret program. She has performed the role of the sorceress in Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneus,” and she released “Songs from the Heart,” a project conceived and recorded live at Heinz Memorial Chapel, Pittsburgh. She has also performed with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, the Westmoreland Symphony, Chatham Baroque as well as performances with Central City, Pittsburgh Opera, Opera North, Berks Grand Opera and the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh.

The scholarship competition, one of the most popular in the music department, provides SRU music majors the opportunity to demonstrate their vocal talent and allows the local community to both see and hear the performing arts talent of university voice students. The scholarship was created by Mr. Williamson’s family, including his mother Mrs. Karen Hickok, as a means of helping SRU’s music department attract talented vocal performers.

The competition/concert will include performances by previous scholarship winners and Beth Brady of Vanderbuilt and AmberNesbitt of West Mifflin. Their performances will not be judged.
