The 1:30 p.m. Friday
[Nov. 5] inauguration of Dr. Robert Smith as 15th
president of Slippery Rock Universitywill see more
than 300 delegates from colleges and universities attending –
including those representing the University of Bologna founded in
Italy in 1088, Harvard University, founded in 1636, the College of
William and Mary, founded in 1693, and the University of
Pennsylvania founded in 1740. The event should offer an array of
color as delegates wear the academic regalia representative of
their home university. Students representing 41 international
countries, 68 student organizations and 21 varsity sports will also
participate. The event will offer excellent feature story and
colorful photo opportunities.
The installation
(weather permitting) will also see a three-block, across campus
procession as dignitaries and delegates process from the newly
constructed pedestrian walkway to the University Union, site of the
inauguration ceremony. The procession will begin at 12:30 p.m.
(We have made arrangement for access to the Bailey Library roof
for photography and video coverage.)
Dr. Judy Hample,
chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education,
will conduct the investiture and installation. Also participating
will be representatives of the study body, faculty, staff as well
as the Slippery Rock University Foundation, Inc., and the local
community. A medallion, handcrafted by Robert Bruya, SRU art
professor, will be presented. A public reception in Boozel Dining
Hall will follow the ceremony.

Phi Kappa
Phi:The prestigious Phi Kappa Phi, the
nation’s oldest, all-academic honorary, will install its news
chapter – Slippery Rock University – at formal
ceremonies set for 7 p.m. Thursday [Nov. 4] in the University
Union. Founded in 1897, the society has chapters at 300
universities. Phi Kappa Phi Regional Vice President Ronald Johnson
of Old Dominion University will conduct the ceremony and Dr. David
Scobey, director of the Arts of Citizenship Program and an
associate professor at the Taubman College of Architecture and
Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, will give the
keynote. The ceremony will include induction of the first class of
students, faculty and staff to represent SRU.
Harambee
Summit:Following Dr. Smith’s Friday
inauguration as president, SRU will open the first Harambee Summit
bringing some 300 minority students to campus for a weekend to
address issues pertinent to success at predominantly white colleges
and universities. The program , which opens at 7 p.m., was
designed by theWestern Pennsylvania Diversity
Consortium in conjunction with SRU’s Office of Intercultural
Programs. The term “Harambee” is Swahilli for
“let’s pull together.” Keynote speakers for the
weekend include: Dr. W.
Terrell Jones, vice provost for educational
equity at Penn State University; Dr. Deborale Richardson-Bouie,
director of multicultural affairs, Case
Western Reserve University; Kevin Powell,
author/lecturer, hip hop activist; Diane Jefferson, director of
multicultural student affairs, Shippensburg University; and
Dorian Cast, inspirational speaker/minister from Detroit, Mich.
Workshop topics will include: Self Empowerment, Spirituality,
Inter/Intracultural Relationships, Economics, Leadership
Development, Career Development, Academic Enhancement, Political
