SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY PLANS 16TH ANNUAL ‘PROJECT CHRISTMAS ELF’

TO BENEFIT UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN IN BUTLER, LAWRENCE COUNTIES

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Project Christmas Elf, now in its 16th year of helping underprivileged Butler and Lawrence county children, kicks off Wednesday [Nov. 10] with a goal of providing Christmas presents to 300 this year in a program organized by the university’s Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership.

The program, begun as part of SRU’s 1889 bicentennial celebration is estimated by some to have provided nearly $250,000 in toys and clothing, now obtains names from the Salvation Army chapters in Butler and New Castle then provides the child’s wish list to individuals, campus offices, departments, organizations and community groups for filling. Last year, the University and community provided Christmas to some 250 needy children in the region.

The gifts will be gathered from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Russell Wright Alumni House for delivery to the Salvation Army for actual distribution.

Last year, the university and community provided Christmas to some 250 needy children in the region.

Those interested in “adopting” a child for the 2004 holiday are asked to call 724-738-2273 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays before Nov. 24.
