Editor/reporters looking for a local/regional person who will be voting in the upcoming Iraq elections are advised that Dr. Abbass Alkhafaji, professor in Slippery Rock University’s School of Business, will be among his family members traveling to Michigan on Saturday [Jan. 30] to cast his ballot.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The story came to Dr. Anne Slanina, associate professor of elementary education and early childhood at Slippery Rock University, in a dream and in short order she fleshed it out to a 46-page children’s book that is opening family discussions for nearly every reader.

» Wheaton College Professor to Lecture on Iraq, Latin America Connection
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Dr. Lindy Scott, a Wheaton College associate professor of Spanish and Latin American studies and director of its Center for Applied Christian Ethics, will deliver “Iraq: What We Should have Learned from Latin America” when he lectures at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at Slippery Rock University.

» SRU Again Hosts PMEA District 5 High School Jazz Festival; Concert Saturday
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Guest directors Dr. Keith Winking of Texas State University and Dr. David Glover, assistant professor of music, will put music students from 10 regional high schools through their paces when Slippery Rock University hosts the Pennsylvania Music Education Association District 5 Jazz Festival this weekend, including a 2 p.m. Saturday [Jan. 29] public performance.

» Nearly 175 SRU Students to Spend Spring Break Studying Abroad
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Nearly 175 Slippery Rock University students will spend spring break immersed in culture and learning at international locations, including some providing hands-on health care in rural portions of the Dominican Republic, as part of a joint effort by academic departments and the Office of International Initiatives.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service program held Monday at Slippery Rock University saw three faculty members and a student presented the annual Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Leadership Award in honor of their outstanding involvement and community leadership.

» SRU Faculty to Offer Music Tour of Vienna at Scholarship Concert
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The works of Haydn, Schubert and the blend of Schoenfield’s American, Viennese, light classical and Broadway styles will be featured when the Slippery Rock Piano Trio performs “An Afternoon in Vienna” at 4 p.m. Jan. 30 to benefit the Dwight and Jeane Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund.

» SRU Singers to Perform at PNC Pittsburgh Pops' Tribute to Irving Berlin
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Fifteen Slippery Rock University singers will perform as part of the All-Star College Chorus when Principal Pops Conductor Marvin Hamlisch and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs a tribute to composer Irving Berlin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall. Tickets are still available.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service on Monday with a series of activities, including community service at eight sites throughout Butler/Mercer county. More than 150 student volunteers are expected to participate.   SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – More than 150 Slippery Rock University student volunteers are expected to turnout for the university’s second annual Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service set for Jan. 17 and including participation in the Unity Project breakfast in Butler, a series of community service projects and a keynote address delivered by the co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center Morris Dees.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership has launched a campus and community fund drive to help in the worldwide relief efforts to aid victims in the south-east Asian countries hit by December’s tsunami.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- An award of $15,000 marks the third consecutive year the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation has provided a grant to support Slippery Rock University’s efforts at improving the lives of those with spinal cord injury.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Picture an ice cube. Paint it blue-gray and you’ve got the gray treefrog in winter, says Dr. Jack Layne, a Slippery Rock University biology professor whose freeze-thaw research with frogs shows potential application to human organ transplants.
