ROCK STUDENT-ATHLETES DO THE JOB IN
CLASSROOM
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. – If pending NCAA legislation designed to improve
academic achievements by student-athletes were to take effect
immediately and apply to NCAA Division II institutions, Slippery
Rock University would be in good standing.
Rock student-athletes continued to do the
job in the classroom and compare favorably to the
university’s student body in general in terms of academic
achievement.
According
to statistics released by the SRU athletic department, Rock
student-athletes as a group achieved a 3.036 grade-point average
during fall semester 2004. That was nearly one point higher than
the 2.951 GPA compiled by the SRU overall student
body.
Female
student-athletes at SRU had a 3.214 GPA, while the
university’s overall female student body achieved a 3.106
GPA.
Rock
male student-athletes had a 2.873 GPA, while the university’s
overall male student body achieved a 2.752 GPA.
Fifty-five
percent (303 of 547) of The Rock’s student-athletes had a 3.0
or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, including 29 percent (159 of 547) who
had student-athletes had a 3.5 or higher QPA and 45
student-athletes who had a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Broken
down by teams, the women’s field hockey team led the way with
a 3.35 GPA, followed by women’s basketball at 3.327,
women’s cross country at 3.296 and men’s cross country
at 3.286.
Also compiling
cumulative GPAs of 3.2 or higher were the women’s volleyball
(3.270), women’s softball (3.246), women’s track and
field (3.243) and women’s swimming (3.206)
squads.
All 10 Rock
women’s teams had cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher, while
four of 11 men’s teams achieved that goal.
