A
quick reminder that Slippery Rock University will observe the Rev.
Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service on Monday with a series of
activities, including community service at eight sites throughout
Butler/Mercer county. More than 150 student volunteers are expected
to participate. A complete news release was sent earlier detailing
the event (which was started last year), including bio material on
keynote speaker Morris Dees, is available at:

The
program, which will offer outstanding photo and feature story
opportunities, opens with participation in the 8:30 a.m. Unity
Project breakfast at the Butler YWCA.
The
on-campus portion of the program opens at 11 a.m. in the University
Union with remarks by SRU officials, the preliminary round of the
university’s annual Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Speech
Competition and lunch.
Following lunch, an
estimated 150 students will be dispatched via vans beginning at
12:30 p.m. (site arrival should be completed by 1 p.m. and the
projects will begin site departure at 3:30 p.m.)

for possible photos/interview are as follows:
30 students, Orchard Manor, 20
Orchard Drive, Grove City – visiting with
residents;
50
students, Grove City YMCA, 543 E Main St. Ext., Grove City –
helping with children’s programs;

students, Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Rescue Team, 162 Elm St.,
Slippery Rock;
20
students, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 663 Barkeyville Road, Grove
City, beautification project;
20 students,
Slippery Rock University Child Care Center, 007 McKay Education
Building, helping with children;
30
students, Fellowship Manor, 19 Orchard Drive, Grove City, visiting
with residents;
10
students, Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St., Grove City, special
beautification project;
Butler VA Medical Center, 325 New Castle
Road, Butler, reading to veterans.
The day ends with a 6 p.m.
candlelight vigil walk/march across campus ending at Miller
Auditorium where Morris Dees, co-founder of the Southern Poverty
Law Center, in Montgomery, Ala., will deliver the keynote address.
(Security will be restricted with those carrying backpacks,
packages, etc., inspected on entry.)

Note: There are no day or evening classes
for students on Monday. University offices will remain
open.
