Dr. Robert Marcus is a
leader in education and business. His professional experience in
these fields spans four decades. In his spare time, Dr. Marcus
golfs, reads, volunteers for the Israeli army, and travels.
The SRU Council of Trustees elected Dr. Marcus chair June 2003,
following four years as a trustee. He is a 1961 graduate of
Slippery Rock University with a bachelor of science degree in
health and physical education. He has a masters in administration
from Shippensburg University, a masters in administration from
Western Maryland, and a doctor of education degree from Nova
University.
Dr. Marcus retired in 1995 after 34 years in the Harrisburg School
District as a teacher and administrator. For 40 years he has been
president of Marcus Bonding, a family business.
He has been active in local politics as president of the
Susquehanna Township Board of School Directors for 10 years and a
commissioner of Susquehanna township for six years. He also was a
founder and first commissioner of the Slow Pitch Softball
Association of Central Pennsylvania and a founder of the Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame of Central Pennsylvania.
Dr. Marcus has funded two scholarships for minority students who
attend Slippery Rock University from the Harrisburg area. His
children are both graduates of Carnegie Mellon University. His son,
Jeff, leads his own acting school and his daughter, Beth, is a high
school and college writing teacher. Eileen, his wife, is a former
Slippery Rock University student and retired librarian from the
Harrisburg School System.
"Being a member of the Council of Trustees at Slippery Rock
University has given me great satisfaction and pride," Dr. Marcus
says. "Working in a leadership role has provided me with insight as
to the strong academic and diverse offerings at the University. My
goal is to do what is best for The Rock." |
