‘TRUMPET DAY AT THE ROCK’ SET FOR
SATURDAY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– Tut-ta-taaa – SRU will present “Trumpet
Day at The Rock” on Saturday [April 30] with a full day of
instruction and masterclass work by trumpet experts, including work
with the famed former NBC Symphony player and jazz educator Raymond
Crisara, and a 4:30 p.m. public trumpet recital. All events are in
Swope Music Hall.
The day, which
begins at 10 a.m., is being organized by Dr. Stephen Hawk,
associate professor of music.
Crisara will offer
an open discussion on trumpet concepts at 3:15 p.m. He began his
career by attending Ernest Williams School of Music, then became a
soloist with the Goldman Band in New York. He played first trumpet
with the Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra at age 19 and after
World War II returned to New York City to join the National
Broadcasting Company staff orchestra, including work in the NBC
Symphony under conductor Arturo Toscanni. At NBC, he also played
for major television projects as well as for variety shows,
including those staring Perry Como and Sid Caesar, as well as work
on commercials and jingles. He served as a professor at the
University of Texas and is now a professor emeritus.
Jack Shantz, will
open the day’s event with “A Methodical Approach to
Jazz Improvisation for Today’s Trumpeters.” Shantz is
director of jazz studies at the University of Akron and joined the
Cleveland Jazz Orchestra in 1988 after touring with such bands as
Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Wood Herman. He has been
music director of the CJO since 1993 and has been featured on
several albums, including “An Oscar Peterson Christmas,
“”Speechless,” and
“Choices”
At 11:15 a.m., Hawk
will offer “Interpretation and Style Concepts for the Lead
Trumpeter.” In addition to his teaching trumpet at SRU, Hawk
is director of the SRU Jazz Ensemble I. He received his doctor of
music arts degree in trumpet with jazz emphasis from the University
of Texas at Austin where he studied with Crisara. He undertakes
extensive freelance work as first trumpeter throughout the region,
including the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and the Broadway Series
Orchestra. He was part of the band backing Nancy Wilson on her
recent Grammy award win.
Neal Bernsten,
second trumpet with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and a former
member of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra as well as a faculty
member of at both Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon universities, will
offer “Straight Eights? Orchestral Trumpet in the 21st
Century” at 2 p.m. Bernsten was a finalist in both the
Maurice Andre International Trumpet Competition in Parris and the
Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition. His album work
includes the Orchestras of Pittsburgh and Chicago, Manheim
Steamroller, The American Girl Doll Christmas album and has
performed with Michael Jackson.
The 4:30 p.m.
trumpet recital will feature Dr. Keioth Winking, professor at Texas
State University and directs the Texas State Jazz Orchestra. The
concert will include Michael Corrette’s “Suite
C-Dur,” featuring Winkling, who is also a member of the South
West Brass Works. He holds his doctorate from the University of
Texas and has studied with Crisara.
