Do I need a Cover Letter?
  • Yes.
  • This is how you introduce yourself, express your motivation for teaching, cite specific examples to prove your abilities, and to demonstrate your written communication skills.

Why are they so important?
  • Many school districts keep each candidates application materials on file, your well written cover letter could persuade personnel that you are the professional they should contact for an interview.
  • However, your letter must look good and contain relevant information to be considered.

What format should I use to write my cover letter?
  • Heading -- your address and date; Inside address -- the name and address to whom you're writing.
  • Salutation -- "Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. Last Name:"
  • Body -- keep paragraphs short.
  • Closing -- "Sincerely," is an example; Signature -- always an original signature.
  • Typed name -- to clarify the spelling of your name.
  • Enclosure -- notation if a resume, application, etc., is enclosed.

**Each letter should be printed on the same quality paper as your resume and with a laser or jet printer**

What is a letter of inquiry?
  • A way to inquire about any future openings or to apply for a specific teaching position.
  • Be sure to let the reader know your areas of certification and what information you are requesting (current or anticipated openings, application procedures, etc.).

How is an application letter different?
  • This letter informs the reader of the position you are interested in, how you found about it, and formally requests an application package.
  • For Pennsylvania Schools, you may submit a completed Standard Application and ask if the district requires additional materials.
  • To save time, you may want to call a district to request an application and make sure the position is still available. The body of these letters should relate your experiences to a specific position.
  • The letter should not duplicate the resume. Instead, the letter informs the readers about your qualifications and invites them to read the resume for more facts.
