COMMUNITY RESIDENTS,
MERCHANTS INVITED TO HELP
SLIPPERY ROCK
UNIVERSITY FRESHMEN MOVE IN AUG. 25-26
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University is
inviting community volunteers to help move in one of the largest
freshman classes in recent history Aug. 25-26. The Week of Welcome
includes orientation activities and programs through Labor Day
weekend.
Residents and local merchants are encouraged to
participate to promote community pride, said SRU’s Karen
Perry, coordinator of Week of Welcome. Week of Welcome utilizes
more than 400 volunteers, including upper-class students, faculty,
staff and alumni. Volunteers will be given Week of Welcome
staff T-shirts as a token of appreciation.
Freshmen
move in from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 25 and from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug.
26. SRU utilizes groups of 15-25 volunteers every hour to
accomplish the move-in. Volunteers are needed to participate in the
event from serving refreshments to carrying students’
personal items to the rooms.
“The move-in of almost 1,500 new freshmen is a
monumental task, but when more than 400 volunteers help out, the
task is handled much quicker and with fewer hassles,” said
Dr. Robert Watson, vice president for student life. “Week of
Welcome is an important tradition. From the time the university was
founded, 116 years ago, community residents have played an active
role in students’ lives. We want new students and families to
feel welcomed by the university community from the minute they get
here and to remember the red carpet long after they
graduate.”
To volunteer, call Perry at
724-738-4895.
SRU
begins its fall semester Aug. 29. Official enrollment numbers will
be posted on the 15th day of classes.
