Biography:
Dr. Joanne Leight is Assistant Professor of Physical Education. She received her B.S. from the Rock in Health and Physical Education with an emphasis in athletic training. Her Master of Science degree is in Sport Psychology / Sport Sociology, also from Slippery Rock. She served as Head Softball Coach at SRU from 1996-2003. Before returning to her alma mater, she taught and coached (softball, volleyball, soccer) at Westminster College for nine years. She recently compled the ILEAD doctoral program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and graduated on December 18, 2004. Her dissertation was titled, "An Analysis of the Use of Web-based Learning in the Physical Education and Related Departments in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education." She successfully defended her dissertation on August 18, 2004.
A research area of interest is technology and physical education. Dr. Leight has completed the instructional technology certification at Duquesne University, and hopes to integrate more technology into the physical education curriculum. In December 2003, she and Dr. Kathy Davis received a grant titled, The Integration of Digital Video Technology into the Physical Education Curriculum to Enhance Student Learning and Professional Productivity, from the "Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable (TLTR)". During the Fall 2002 semester she and Ms. Darlene Bullock received a grant from "Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers To Use Technology (PT3)" and used palm pilots with the students in Ms. Bullock's elementary methods course. The grant was titled, Technology - It's in the Palm of Your Hand. Dr. Leight is currently the chair of the Pennsylvania State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (PSAHPERD) Technology Committee. She has also received a grant from PEsoftware for a site license for the software Sim Athlete in December 2004.
Currently Dr. Leight is teaching Technology for PETE, Philosophy and Psychology of Coaching, and supervising student teachers in Ireland. She supervised student teachers in Mexico City from April 3-May 4, 2005. Here is a link to all of the PETE courses .
