SRU TO HOST DAYLONG CLINIC FEATURING DRUMMER JOHN RILEY    

     SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  The Pennsylvania Percussive Arts Society will offer a “Day of Percussion” from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday [Sept. 18] in Swope Recital Hall, including world-famous drummer John Riley and performances by a Washington, D.C.,-based percussion duo and The Afro-Cuban Percussion Section, among others.

     The event is being organized by Dr. David Glover, SRU assistant professor of music, who explains the event, open to the public, will feature the Washington, D.C.-based, Sylvia Smith Percussion Duo offering a multi-percussion, innovative percussion and theater ensemble at noon.

     Riley, also known as an author and educator, will perform on the drum set at 1 p.m., followed by Chile native Leo Soto, principal timpanist with the Detroit Opera, at 2 p.m.; Dr. Glenn Schaft, professor of percussion at Youngstown State University, offering details on the snare drum at 3 p.m.; and The Afro-Cuban Percussion Section” performing at 4 p.m. The section includes Glover on drum set, Soto on timbales, George Jones on congas and Joe Moran on bongos.

     Admission is $10 for the general public; $5 for PAS members with current ID.

     The clinic is supported by the PAS, SRU, Volkweins Music, and drummakers Zildjian, Remo, Sabian, Yamaha, Latin Percussion, Pro-Mark and Mike Balter.
