SRU PLANS MONTHLONG SERIES TO MARK BLACK
HISTORY MONTH
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– Slippery Rock University’s observance of Black
History Month, primarily organized and sponsored by the Office of
Intercultural Affairs, will offer nearly a dozen events throughout
February offering opportunities to discuss diversity and other
cultural issues.
The month will also
include a series of films designed to spark discussions. All
activities, unless otherwise indicated, will take place in the
University Union.
The calendar
includes a 7:30 p.m. Thursday [Feb. 2] showing of “The
Gospel,” sponsored by SRU’s Black Action Society. An
“Interactive Lecture: The Art of Kissing” will be held
at 8 p.m., Feb. 7, sponsored by the University Program Board,
followed at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 by the film “40 Acres and Mule: A
Presentation about Reparations.” sponsored by Phi Beta Sigma
fraternity, and at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9 by the film “The Color
Purple,” sponsored by BAS.
At 1 p.m.,
Feb 10, the “Transition Student Development Series: Kuumba
(creativity)” continues facilitated by Dr. Renay Scales,
assistant vice president for human resources and diversity, and Dr.
Wayne Forbes, assistant professor, biology, sponsored by the Office
of Intercultural Programs. “Eat Your Heart Out,”
offering a free chocolate fountain, Sticky Pics and a caricaturist,
will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 14 sponsored by
UPB.
“Black
Jeopardy, sponsored by BAS, will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15,
and “Black Images and Inventions” will be offered at 8
p.m., Feb. 20, and on Feb. 21 the “State of America: The New
Pink: The Effect of Current Trends On Pop Culture” will be
offered at 1 p.m. sponsored by Intercultural Programs. The movie
“Hotel Rwanda” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22,
sponsored by BAS.
Rocky’s
Coffeehouse will feature Chris Cauley and The Animators at 6 p.m.
Feb. 24, sponsored by UPB, and the month’s activities will
conclude with the “Ebony Ball” at 8 p.m. Feb. 25 in
Boozel Dining Hall.
