Opportunities in Gerontology

  • Student Gerontological Society (SGS) –Affiliated with the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), this student professional organization is devoted to raising awareness of issues of aging on campus and in the community.  Students participate in the campus-wide Healthfest in October, organize the annual Ann T. Bicknell Scholarship and Recognition Dinner in April, and attend national and regional conferences.  Other activities include: community outreach activities, curriculum committee, and program marketing.
  • Sigma Phi Omega (SPO) – Many students involved in the SGS are also members of SPO.  This national honorary in gerontology recognizes students’ exemplary scholastic accomplishments in the field of aging.  Undergraduate students with a QPA of 3.3 or above are eligible to apply and graduate students with a QPA of 3.5 or above are also eligible.
  • Scholarships – The Ann T. Bicknell Scholarship recognizes students who have made significant contributions within the field and study of gerontology.  Each spring, from a pool of applicants, one student is selected to receive this honor.  The amount of the scholarship is based on the accrued yearly interest earned from the invested funds.  Applications are available in the Gerontology Program office (216G BSB) and must be received by March 15 of each year.
  • Student Awards – The American Society on Aging and the National Council on Aging annually awards undergraduate students for exemplary original work in an aging related conference theme.  Application materials need to be received by October 15th of each year.
  • Sponsorships – Students within the Gerontology Program who hold officer positions within SGS or who have made significant contributions to the Program may be eligible to receive full or partial sponsorships to national and local conferences on gerontological issues.
  •  Field Experience – Gerontology students have the opportunity to conduct internships as a component of their major.  This is the major internship may substitute for the minor internship, if appropriate.  Opportunities to volunteer or serve the elderly in numerous capacities are available in the community.
  • Graduate Assistantship (GA) –A graduate assistantship is available in Gerontology.  Graduate students are normally hired for two-year appointments, working 8.75-17.5 hours per week during the academic year.  A tuition waiver and stipend is included with the appointment.
  • Resource Room – The Resource Room houses books, journals, videotapes and equipment for use by students pursuing gerontology.  A large conference table is also made available to students to hold meetings (as needed).
