Slippery Rock
University Foundation, Inc.
Early settlers of the
Slippery Rock area believed that family, church and school were
important in the lives of their children. By 1887 area
citizens wanted to establish an academy for their children, an
advanced school beyond the elementary grades. On May 3, 1888,
it was announced that $17,325 was raised by various
activities for the normal school and the community went about the
task of building. Citizens donated their time and resources for
this important project. In a remarkably short period of time, the
citizens of Slippery Rock had created for the young people of the
region the Slippery Rock State Normal School.
Today, this culture of
giving continues to enhance Slippery Rock University by changing
the landscape of the campus, strengthening its ability to attract
and retain deserving and talented students and building the
foundation for an even brighter future.
