 Overview

Doctor of physical therapy (DPT) students at Slippery Rock University (SRU) are required to take Administration (66- 745) through distance education while they are completing a 15-week clinical internship.  Students may be anywhere in United States and sometimes, they are in Australia or Scotland.

Proposed scripts containing key questions for the experts were developed by Dr. Billek and student Casey Warso.  These two traveled to clinics and offices in Western PA to interview and videotape the individuals.

The following individuals were interviewed.  Their topics areas were listed below:

1.   Carole Galletta, PT, MPH                                $200

         Corporate Compliance

         Fraud and Abuse

         APTA

2.                  Mark Van Volkenburg, PT                         $200

4.                  Kent Culley                                                $200

5.                  Cindy Potter                                              $100

         APTA

These experts in physical therapy related business practices were videotaped; the tapes were digitized with the assistance of Brian Danielson and Graduate Assistant, Timika Screven.  They were copied by the Computer Center and mailed to students on a CD-ROM so students sere able to learn from an expert in a particular area of business practice.

Goals/objectives

The long-term goals of this project were met:

§         Incorporate video clips in distant based education course, Administration, 66-745.

§         Develop a mini-video library of experts being interviewed or providing mini-lectures on many topic areas covered in this course.

Specific Objectives of this project:

  • Develop mini-lectures and/or interviews of experts on key topic areas covered in Administration.
  • Convert these lectures/interviews to digital format.
  • Provide CDs to students enrolled in the course during Fall 2006.
  • Incorporate material being covered/addressed in discussion boards via asynchronous dialog and assessment (quiz questions).

Problems Encountered

The primary problem with this project was the newly purchased camera.  Advice was sought from the former TLTR Graduate Assistant on the specific camera to purchase which the department purchased.  The images on the camera were excellent but the audio was of very poor quality.  We have received extensive negative feedback from students using the DVDs on the inability to understand the interviews.  This was and is extremely frustrating.

Cost for project

Significantly less than the proposed costs were used for this project.  Dr. Billek used a third-year student for her independent study for interviews.  The department GA was used for converting digitized tapes to DVDs.
