SRU’S SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM ENDORSED
BY NATIONAL COUNCIL
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The national Council
on Social Work Education has re-affirmed Slippery Rock
University’s Social Work Program for eight years. The backing
means the program meets the council’s curriculum standards
for preparing graduates to work at social service
agencies.
The
reaffirmation followed a five-year review of program faculty,
curriculum, goals, administrative structure and success of
graduates.
“This
re-affirmation guarantees for the public that the academic
standards are such that our program is top-notch in the country and
the state,” said SRU’s Dr. Thomas Bechard, assistant
professor of sociology/anthropology and social work and program
coordinator.
Based
in Alexandria, Va., the Council on Social Work Education promotes
academic excellence in social work and specifies the curricular
content that best prepares students for professional social work
practice. To be affirmed, the council requires a solid core of
courses on social welfare issues and policies, social work practice
skills, research methods and background in psychology, biology,
economics, diversity and politics.
With
117 students enrolled, SRU’s Social Work Program prepares
graduates for general social work practice, Bechard said. Graduates
typically find work in child welfare, juvenile and adult
corrections, public assistance, health and mental health, aging,
and addiction treatment.
SRU’s
program is 54 credits and requires a 540-hour internship. Students
graduate with a bachelor of science degree in social
work.
Regional Learning Alliance presence
SRU offers core social
work courses at the Regional Learning Alliance in Marshall
Township, Allegheny County. They include “Social
Welfare Institutions,” “Social Work Methods III”
and “Social Policy Issues” and are offered in the
evening. These courses make higher education convenient for working
professionals.
