SRU THEATER DEPARTMENT EXPLORES NAZI ERA WITH ‘ROSENSTRASSE’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  The plight of German women married to Jewish men during the rule of the Third Reich will be explored when Slippery Rock University’s theater department presents “Rosenstrasse,” a Terry Lawrence play offer in five performances in Miller Auditorium.

General public tickets are $5, $3 for SRU students with ID, for the 8 p.m. performances April 26-29 and the 2 p.m. April 30 performance, and may be obtained by calling the Miller Auditorium Box Office, 724-738-2645,  from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Set during World War II, the play points out the German rule in such situations was to obtain a divorce, but the play’s women elect to rally to their husband’s prison in peaceful protest. The women eventually formed one of the largest peaceful protests in Nazi history, reaching nearly 6,000 wives and daughters and forestalling their loved ones’ departures. Their true story is the basis for the production.

The work focuses on five wives played by Erin Berger of Beaver, Andrea Carlin of Montrose, Emily Ludwig of Russell, Shari Mastalski of Butler, Bethany Vahabzadeh of Pittsburgh, and a daughter of a Jewish father played by Laura Allen of Bellwood. Other cast members include Eric Blackstock of Monroeville, Nick Ciesielski, Bridgeville, Mike D’Alesio, Harrison City, Casey Reiland, Harrisville, and Dennis Whalen, Evan City. Completing the cast are Randi Gartner of West Middlesex and Rikki Stupka of Butler.

Laura Smiley, assistant professor of theater, directs, with Braden Blauser, a student from Parker, serving as scenic designer, and Gordon Phetteplace, associate professor of theater, as designing lighting. Nick Quinn of Pittsburgh is in charge of sound, with Amanda Armor of Natrona Heights, designing costumes and Casey Hughes of Roseland, N.J., serving as properties master. Stage manager Stephanie Brauner of Palm City will be aided by Sam Lee of Oil City and Alex McNeill of New Castle.
