SRU THEATER DEPARTMENT EXPLORES NAZI ERA WITH
‘ROSENSTRASSE’
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The plight of German women married to Jewish men
during the rule of the Third Reich will be explored when Slippery
Rock University’s theater department presents
“Rosenstrasse,” a Terry Lawrence play offer in five
performances in Miller Auditorium.

tickets are $5, $3 for SRU students with ID, for the 8 p.m.
performances April 26-29 and the 2 p.m. April 30 performance, and
may be obtained by calling the Miller Auditorium Box Office,
724-738-2645, from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through
Fridays.
Set during World
War II, the play points out the German rule in such situations was
to obtain a divorce, but the play’s women elect to rally to
their husband’s prison in peaceful protest. The women
eventually formed one of the largest peaceful protests in Nazi
history, reaching nearly 6,000 wives and daughters and forestalling
their loved ones’ departures. Their true story is the basis
for the production.
The work
focuses on five wives played by Erin Berger of Beaver, Andrea
Carlin of Montrose, Emily Ludwig of Russell, Shari Mastalski of
Butler, Bethany Vahabzadeh of Pittsburgh, and a daughter of a
Jewish father played by Laura Allen of Bellwood. Other cast members
include Eric Blackstock of Monroeville, Nick Ciesielski,
Bridgeville, Mike D’Alesio, Harrison City, Casey Reiland,
Harrisville, and Dennis Whalen, Evan City. Completing the cast are
Randi Gartner of West Middlesex and Rikki Stupka of
Butler.
Laura Smiley,
assistant professor of theater, directs, with Braden Blauser, a
student from Parker, serving as scenic designer, and Gordon
Phetteplace, associate professor of theater, as designing lighting.
Nick Quinn of Pittsburgh is in charge of sound, with Amanda Armor
of Natrona Heights, designing costumes and Casey Hughes of
Roseland, N.J., serving as properties master. Stage manager
Stephanie Brauner of Palm City will be aided by Sam Lee of Oil City
and Alex McNeill of New Castle.
