‘THREE M’S’ CONCERT AT SRU TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BAKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –  A “Three M’s” concert featuring Mozart, Martin and Mendelssohn will be presented by three Slippery Rock University music department faculty at 4 p.m. April 23 in Swope Recital Hall raising funds for the Dwight and Jeane Baker Memorial Fund Scholarship.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students, with additional fund contributions accepted.

The concert and scholarship honor the memory of the long-standing music faculty members who retired in 1983. Mr. Baker joined the faculty as band director and director of the men’s glee club, the orchestra and critic teacher in the lab school in 1949. He served as chair of the music department and oversaw creation of SRU’s bachelor of science in music education. In addition, he was a composer and arranger. Ms. Baker joined the faculty in 1965 teaching piano and class piano. She served as accompanist for the SRU Choir, SRU Chamber Singers and the SRU Symphonic Choir and performed at various community and university events in addition to establishing the Noteworthy Piano Studio in Slippery Rock where she offered private lessons. She was church organist at Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock for 52 years.

The concert will off Mozart’s “Trio in C Major,” Martin’s “Trio on Popular Irish Melodies,” and Mendelssohn’s “Trio in D minor.”

Featured musicians will be Dr. Nanette Kaplan Solomon, a professor in the SRU music department since 1977 teaching piano, music history, music skills and women in music. She has released three compact discs and performs with his sister Iris Kaplan as the Kaplan Duo. Warren Davidson, instructor and conductor of the Slippery Rock Symphony Orchestra teaching violin, viola and string classes. He is completing his doctorate studies at West Virginia University and soloed recently with the Altoona and Westmoreland symphony orchestras And, Paula Tuttle, an instructor at SRU, who teaches cello. She has performed with the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestra at the Benedum Center since 1987 and has toured the Far East with orchestras playing a number of solo and chamber recital in Europe and across the U.S. She is also a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne universities.
