III. Program – Technology
in Modern Languages – Ana Maria Caula and Eva
Tsuquiashi-Daddesio
How would you like to take attendance with one click of the
mouse? Allow your students to work in pairs and collaborate
on documents without leaving their seats? What if you could
see every student’s work and speak with them about it,
without leaving YOUR seat? And all in another language?
At Tuesday’s TLTR meeting, Dr. Ana Maria Caula and Dr. Eva
Tsuquiashi-Daddesio demonstrated and discussed the hardware and
software used to teach in the Modern Languages lab in
Carruth-Rizza. The Sony Virtuoso/Soloist Multimedia Language
Learning System offers the instructors a great deal of control over
the lab environment and brings effective, interactive learning
experiences to their students. Students and teachers can
communicate via headphones and microphones; this "non-threatening"
paired language practice is reported to have greatly increased
student fluency. Quizzes can be published to the entire
class, allowing instructors to instantly assess student
comprehension by using the analyzer control panel. In
addition, the Modern Languages and Cultures department has acquired
a dedicated server to accommodate the large audio, video, and image
resources they share for instruction—a home grown Merlot (http://www.merlot.org)of
sorts. By leveraging student technology fee grants, college
and department funds, and TLTR funding, these dedicated faculty
members have successfully employed technology to improve student
learning -- and recently presented on their endeavors in Granada,
Spain.
