‘MILLENNIAL GENERATON’ FOCUS OF APRIL 27 LECTURE AT SRU

BY AUTHOR, HISTORIAN WILLIAM STRAUSS

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa –  “Millennials and the Pop Culture” is the title of an April 27 lecture at Slippery Rock University by William Strauss, author of 10 books and a leading authority on American generations. His appearance is part of Kaleidoscope, SRU’s April 19-30 arts festival.

The free event begins at 7 p.m. in Swope Recital Hall.

Strauss will describe what he sees as the trend toward optimism and focus in young adult behavior, covering teamwork, safety, long-term planning and neo-traditionalism. The Millennial Generation describes those born between 1977 and 1995.

Strauss has advised numerous public and private organizations about generational trends, including MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, Hearst Magazines, Time Inc., Pepsi, Disney Imagineering, Procter & Gamble, the Ford Motor Co. national college and graduate school admissions organization and the U.S. armed forces.

He has written 10 books—eight about American history and society, and two about political humor—with three co-authors. He has coauthored several books on generations with Neil Howe, all bestsellers widely used by businesses, colleges, government agencies and political leaders of both parties.

Their first book “Generations” (Morrow, 1991) is a history of America told as a sequence of generational biographies. Among Strauss's other generations book “13th Gen” (Vintage, 1993) remains the top selling, non-fiction book on young adults. Strauss and Howe recently released “Millennials and the Pop Culture.”

Strauss has combined a career as a writer/historian with a separate career in theater. He is co-founder and director of Capitol Steps, a professional satirical troupe that performed at SRU earlier this month.
