HARRY M. WARNER FILM FESTIVAL TO RUN
THURSDAY/FRIDAY; 23 Entries to be shown
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Second Annual Festival of Short Film and Video,
sponsored by the Harry M. Warner Film Institute at Slippery Rock
University, will be held Thursday [April 20] on campus and Friday
[April 21] at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, offering
22 entries from across the globe.
The festival
celebrates the Warner Brothers family, including Harry, Abe, Sam
and Jack who opened their first theater in New Castle and went on
to establish the famous Warner Bros. motion picture company in
California.
As part of the
two-day event, George Romero, director of the black-and-white
chiller “Night of the Living Dead” and a favorite among
horror buffs, will be on the SRU campus Wednesday [April 19] for a
showing of his movie “Creepshow,” followed by a
question and answer session. Romero will be at SRU’s
University Union for the 6:30 p.m. movie and Romero will receive a
Keystone Award for his support of movie-making in western
Pennsylvania.
The festival will
include films directed by Yann Chayia, Jill Johnston-Price,
Chinchang Wu and Yihua, Peter Sillen, David Chai, Lacey Banniser,
Dani Rosenberg and others.
The two-day event
opens on campus at 12:30 p.m. in McKay Education Building
Auditorium with a “Reel-to-Reel: Workshop” followed by
screening of the accepted films at 3:15 p.m. in the University
Union and a showing at 6:30 p.m. in Swope Music Hall followed by a
“Meet the Directors” session.
Festivities Friday
in New Castle begin at 5 p.m. at the cathedral, including a book
signing by Cass Warner, granddaughter of Harry M. Warner and author
of “Hollywood Be Thy Name: The Warner Brothers Story”
and followed by a 6:15 p.m. “Tribute to Short Film”
presented by Ursula Payne, associate professor of dance, and the
SRU Dancers, and a 6:30 p.m. showing of the accepted films. At 8:15
p.m. “100 Years of Warner Brothers Studio” and the
awards presentation for the festival will be offered. Tickets are
$10 at the door or by calling 724-654-8408.
Judges for the
event are Cass Warner, Thomas John, a Youngstown, Ohio-based film
reviewer, and Ken Heusey, a Los Angeles-based film director and
producer.
Festivities
conclude with a 9 p.m. “Evening with the Stars” set for
the Mill Street Café in New Castle. Tickets are
$75.
