SRU SENIOR COMPUTER SCIENCE TEAM CAPTURES FIRST PLACE IN STATEWIDE COMPETITION

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s senior computer programming team captured first place in last Saturday’s Pennsylvania Computer and Information Science Educators besting some 20 other teams from across the state.

In the competition, held in Indiana, Pa., two- or three-member teams were given four hours to solve nine programming problems in Java or C++ computer programming language. The SRU senior team captured top honors, and $75 awards each, by solving five problems, while the sophomore team took 13th place for solving two problems.

Last August, SRU’s computer science department was awarded accreditation for six separate degree programs in computer science and information systems by the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology. The computer science accreditation is one of only eight in the state.

The senior team includes computer science majors Andrew Beers of New Castle, Corey Callihan of Lucinda and Joshua Petry of Zelienople. The sophomore team includes Chris Adams of New Castle, Chris Chapman of Allison Park, and Brian Turner of Pittsburgh.

The team’s advisers are Dr. Deborah Whitfield and Dr. Paul Mullins, both computer science professors.
