SRU WALWIK LECTURE TO EXAMINE ‘ETHICS,
LAW AND TECHNOLOGY IN OPEN SOCIETY’
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– Slippery Rock University’s Second Annual Walwik
Lecture, named for SRU Professor Emeritus Dr. Theodore Walwik, will
present Brian O’Connell, associate professor of computing and
philosophy at Central Connecticut State University addressing
“Ethics, Law and Technology in an Open Society” on
Tuesday [April 25].
The free
event will be held at 7 p.m. in Spotts World Culture Building
Auditorium. O’Connell will also speak in communication
classes throughout the day.
O’Connell teaches
courses in computer ethics, jurisprudence and professional
responsibility, as well as programming and robotics. He received
his bachelor of arts degree from Trinity College and his juris
doctorate from the University of Connecticut Law School. A former
practicing attorney in appellate criminal law, O’Connell is a
member of the bar of the United States Supreme Court. His research
interests include jurisprudence of new technologies, professional
ethics, and the ethical, legal and social implications of
technology.
He is former
president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology,
and the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received the
Franklyn Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of
Expression in 1999.

Lectures are made possible through a gift from Dr. Walwik, former
communication department chair at SRU.
