SRU JAZZ FESTIVAL TO INCLUDE HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ
BAND MUSICIANS ON SATURDAY;
AWARD-WINNING BARITONE SAXOPHONIST GARY
SMULYAN TO JAM WITH STUDENTS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Fifth Annual Slippery Rock University Jazz
Festival is being hosted on Saturday [May. 6] in Swope Music Hall,
with the final concert for the event featuring guest artist,
award-winning, saxophonist Gary Smulyan in Miller Auditorium
at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The High
School Jazz Band Adjudication Festival will take place beginning
with bands performing at 10 a.m. and will continue throughout the
day until 5 p.m. There will also be master classes on jazz
instruments by some of today's leading jazz musician's including
SRU's Terry Steele, Dr. David Glover, Jeff Mangone, and Dr. Stephen
Hawk, as well as Steven Snyder, piano, and Paul Ferguson,
trombone. The bands will receive a clinic with an adjudicator
as part of their experience as well as receiving taped comments
from the judges.
Baritone
saxophonist Smulyan, a member of the William Paterson University
music faculty who has recorded five CDs, is acclaimed as one of the
major voices on the baritone saxophone today. As a teenager growing
up on Long Island, he had the opportunity to perform with Lee
Konitz, Chet Baker, and Jimmy Knepper. In 1978 he was asked to join
Woody Herman's Young Thundering Herd, which at that time included
Joe Lovano, Marc Johnson and John Riley. He later joined the Mel
Lewis Jazz Orchestra led by Bob Brookmeyer and has recorded and
performed worldwide with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan
Getz, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Tom Harrell. Cedar Walton, George
Coleman, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Tommy Flanagan, Chick Corea,
Diana Ross, Clark Terry, Kenny Wheeler, Charles McPherson, James
Moody and Slide Hampton, among others.
His CD’s
include “The Lure of Beauty, Saxophone Mosaic,”
“Homage,” “Gary Smulyan with Strings” and
“Blue Seuite with Brass,” all on the CrissCross label,
and his latest “The Real Deal,” on Reservoir Records.
He is the winner of the 1990 Jazz Times Critics Poll, the 1994 Down
Beat Readers Poll, the 1998 Down Beat Critics Poll and was recently
named winner of the 2004 Jazz Journalists' Award for Baritone
Saxophonist of the Year.
Outstanding
section and soloist awards will be announced at the evening
concert.
High Schools
represented at this year's festival include North Allegheny, Upper
St. Clair, State College, North Hills, West Allegheny, and Kiski
Area.
The evening
concert will charge $5 admission for adults.
