SRU PERFORMING ART SERIES BRINGING NATIONALLY
KNOWN ARTISTS TO COMMUNITY
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– A variety of music ranging from the always popular
Kingston Trio to the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops will be offered in
the four-part 2006-07 Slippery Rock University Performing Arts
Series with season tickets on sale now.
“Our first
efforts into a performing arts series was very successful,”
says Deborah Baker, manager of university events. “All four
of the series events sold out, and the extra event, designed for
families, sold out weeks before the performance. We are hopeful
this year’s series will be equally well received by the
regional community, and we are encouraging those interested in
obtaining season tickets to subscribe early.” A special
spring program, not part of the four-event season ticket, is again
designed as family entertainment with emphasis on the youngest
members. The event is “Seussical,” an adapted version
from the popular Broadway musical “Seussical: The
Musical” is planned for 3 p.m., May 20.
The regular series
opens at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 15 in Miller Auditorium on the SRU campus
with The Kingston Trio, a group of singers that emerged from San
Francisco’s North Beach club scene in 1957 bringing the rich
tradition of American folk music into the nation’s musical
mainstream. For two decades, the troupe enjoyed unprecedented
record sales and worldwide fame while becoming a substantial
influence on the nation’s musical tastes. The group has
remained popular by refining its talents, but keeping to its roots,
including its most famous version of “Tom Dooley” as
well as the popular “M.T.A.,” “Blowin’ in
the Wind,” “Try to Remember” and “Lemon
Tree.”
A
collegiate hobby for a few young men in Providence, R.I., has
turned into the very popular musical group known as
“Rockapella.” The group will bring its
“Rockapella Holiday” show to SRU at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 as
family holiday entertainment. The group – John Thacher, Kevin
Wright, George Baldi, Scott Leonard and John Brown – makes
use of a cappella to showcase its musical talents. The singers are
best known as regulars on the popular Public Broadcasting System
show “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?”
Rockapella was a sellout in last season’s series at
SRU.
The emphasis moves
to Pittsburgh in early 2007, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops
taking the Miller Auditorium stage at 8 p.m. Feb. 7 and the
Duquesne University Tamburitzans showing their musical talents at
7:30 p.m. March 30. The Pops will offer an evening of popular
favorites conducted by Resident Director Daniel Meyer. The
Tamburitzans, billed as the longest-running multicultural song and
dance company in American, offers a unique ensemble of talented
young folk artists dedicated to the performance and preservation as
well as the sharing of the music, songs and dances of Eastern
Europe, including Armenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Carpatho-Rus, Croatia,
Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland,
Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and others.
Dressed in brilliantly colored costumes, all of the performers are
full-time Duquesne students.
