Astronomy:  An Introduction to the Night Sky              Astronomy

In this class you will learn the basics of astronomy and the night sky, including:  the universe and our place in it; theories of the universe from various cultures; a summary of current thought about the universe; the stars and constellations;  the Milky Way; stars and star names; what you see when you look into the deep sky with a telescope (galaxies, star clusters, nebula);  the Sun and our solar system;  solar system phenomena (comets, meteors, the aurora borealis, etc); current state of professional and amateur astronomy; observing the sky with the naked eye, binocular and telescope;  and where to get more information.  It is recommended that participants purchase 'The Miller Planisphere' at a cost of $12.95 (details will be provided upon registration).

Keep your joints moving, recapture your old rhythms, and rev up your sense of fun.  This beginning level ballroom dance class will include fox-trot, waltz, swing/jitterbug, cha-cha, tango and rumba.  Dancers will learn timing, style, lead and follow techniques plus a variety of steps for their individual abilities.  This is a hard-working class, with equal parts of fun and humor.

Few beings are as interesting, beautiful and worthy as neotropical birds and butterflies.  To help them, you can learn how to make your dooryard gardens more bird and butterfly friendly by providing the four basic needs (food, water, cover or shelter and breeding space) for their survival.  In fact, now more than ever, you can play a very critical role in preventing our winged friends from extinction.  The instructor will provide handouts and books; please bring $18 to reimburse him at the first class (exact change or check will be appreciated).

Chair Caning & More              ChrCaning

Introduced in this country in the second half of the 17th Century, early chair caning was very coarse with widely spaced holes in the seat or bench.  Beginners will start with a small hand caned stool.  Those who took the previous classes will be working on caning a chair or a piece of furniture of their choice.  All supplies will be furnished at an approximate cost of $25.00, payable to the instructor.

Cities: The City Beautiful Movement              Cities

This talk will investigate the City Beautiful Movement as it emerged in the United States in the late nineteenth century.  This movement was inspired by the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago.  The exposition demonstrated the possibilities of transforming America's cities with broad boulevards, buildings unified by a single architectural style and the creaton of healthier urban settings.  We will examine the several plans that were actually implemented, such as Washington, D.C., Harrisburg and Philadelphia, PA.

Coal Mining Machines in the 20th Century              CoalMine

This class will be a slide program illustrating changes in coal mining methods during the 20th century.  Most of the slides are from underground photos.  Participants will get some idea about an almost unknown industry, what a coal mine looks like and how a miner's work has changed over time.

We once again have an energy crisis in this nation, along with facing a possible recession.  How did we find ourselves back here again?  What can we do now that can make a difference?  Each person can make a difference when we work together as a community.  The iConserve PA public education campaign that the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is implementing provides tips about the conservation steps that we take every day on our public lands that make a difference.  We are connecting with various partners to help save natural resources, protect the environment, and in many cases save money all at the same time.

Criminology: What's Criminal?              Crimolgy

We will focus on criminology -- the study of 'crime' and deviance, examining variations between the two based on formal laws and informal controls of conduct that deviates from the norm.  Crime is based on laws that vary by political jurisdictions. Then we will examine prisons or types of legal social controls and variations between felony and misdemeanor.  Finally we will look at types of crimes and arrests using the FBI' 'Uniform Crime Rate' as the best estimate of crime in America.

This course includes the first six Cantos of 'Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso' which introduce the major themes of the 'Divine Comedy.'  The primary emphasis will be on the poetry of Dante's universal message.  Additional values - political, philosophical and ethical - will also be considered.

Dust Bowl: Unto Dust it May Return              DustBowl

The creation of the Dust Bowl is an excellent case study in an 'ecologic backlash' which resulted in the ruination of a large portion of the southern high plains of America's Heartland.  Its creation also caused widely spread human misery and migration during the depression era of the 30's which has been immortalized in John Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath'.  Can it happen again?  SEE ALSO: Orientation to 'The Grapes of Wrath' opera and the opera performance.

Oprah Winfrey popularized Eckhart Tolle's ideas on national television, and his books have become international best sellers.  Tolle points at techniques to diminish mental noise and ego control.  He gives us the tools to promote consciousness and inner purpose.  We will explore his principles using multi-media, class discussion and his book 'A New Earth'.

For two years, classes using Eckhart Tolle's ideas have attracted ILR participants.  Participants keep coming back because Tolle speaks to them in ways that are life changing.  This term we offer a more in-depth learning experience for those who have already had at least one course on Tolle's concepts.  Class size will be limited to 12 participants and will focus on "awakened doing."

Film: Still More Magic of the Movies              Film6

For our sixth ILR film series, we offer five diverse love stories, most of them with more-or-less happy endings.  After a brief introduction, each movie will be shown in its entirety, followed by a group discussion. We will open with nearly everyone's all-time favorite, 'Casablanca', then 'The Shipping News', 'Heaven', 'The Wedding Banquet' and 'Sense and Sensibility'.  All are chiefly in English except for 'The Wedding Banquet', which is partly in Mandarin with subtitles, and partly in English.

Global Resources: The Growing Fuel and Food Crisis              GloblRes

Economic development, population increase and international power politics are creating an increased competitive demand for limited world resources.  In this class, major attention will be given to how this trend has resulted in rising fuel prices and to critical worldwide shortages and higher costs for food.  Numerous case studies will be used to illustrate the economic, regional and geopolitical causes and consequences of these and other resource problems.
