Afghanistan & Pakistan: The American Challenge Afghnistn
Robert Davis
In 2001 the United States invaded Afghanistan in an effort to eliminate the Al-Qaeda terrorists and neutralize the Taliban government that supported them. After initial success and the establishment of a new Afghan government, the US has been caught up in a resurgent Taliban movement that has spread into neighboring Pakistan. Both nations have complex economic, political and ethnic problems that threaten national unity. The mountainous border zone complicates the American military mission. In this class we will attempt to explain all of these issues and the historic and geopolitical factors that have led to such a volatile situation.

Graveyard to Cemetery: Evolution of a Cultural Landscape Graveyd
Thomas Hannon
Cemeteries are transitional in that they reflect both the time frame in which they were established and the culture in which they are found. Cemeteries in our society moved from graveyards, relatively simple family burying grounds, to church-affiliated havens of eternal rest. The Rural Cemetery and Landscape Garden Cemetery movements of the late 19th century present a totally different appearance. Those taking this course and the trip will see the difference.
NOTE: This class is to be taken in conjunction with the trip to Allegheny & Homewood Cemeteries.
